EU project ENGAGE

The first results of analyses prepared under the ENGAGE project (ENhancinG stAkeholder participation in the GovernancE of radiological risks) show that the inclusion of various stakeholders is quite limited. The understanding about who the stakeholder is in various situations where there is an exposure to ionising radiation is quite a problem. With regard to preparation for extraordinary events involving nuclear or radiological accidents, stakeholders are mostly those who are included in the preparation and manage response. Therefore, such measures are focused on institutions, and the methods of public responses are frequently unverified and can present a reason for many errors and wrong and unexpected reactions. In the case of using ionising radiation in medicine, doctors and patients do not dedicate enough attention to the eligibility and optimisation of radiation usage, therefore, frequent imaging and other unnecessary sources of radiation are usually unnecessary. In the case of radon control in closed areas, appropriate supervision and action programmes have been introduced in the recent past, where the  reference limits are exceeded.
