EIMV at the ICTRAM 2026 Conference in Cavtat

14. May, 2026

Representatives of Elektroinštitut Milan Vidmar (EIMV) participated in the international ICTRAM 2026 conference, held in Cavtat, Croatia, dedicated to modern approaches in the fields of power transformers, modelling, diagnostics, monitoring and power asset management.

As part of the conference program, Tim Gradnik led a tutorial presenting the results of the CIGRE WG A2.60 working group, entitled “Transformer Dynamic Thermal Behaviour, Modelling and Applications.” The tutorial provided a comprehensive overview of dynamic thermal modelling of transformers, with emphasis on modern approaches for predicting transformer temperature behaviour under real operating conditions. Topics included the limitations of existing IEC and IEEE standard models, modelling of variable cooling modes, and the application of advanced methods such as thermo-hydraulic models, CFD approaches, and machine-learning-based models. An open-source benchmarking system for comparing dynamic thermal models was also presented, together with practical applications of transformer digital twins for load management, lifetime assessment, and optimization of power system operation.

At the conference, Tim Gradnik, together with co-authors I. Daminov and T. Laneryd, also presented a technical paper entitled “Concepts, Dynamic Thermal Rating of Power Transformers Standards, and Applications.” The paper discusses the development and standardization of Dynamic Thermal Rating (DTR) for transformers and presents modern approaches for real-time assessment of transformer capability using thermal models, sensor systems, and operational data for more efficient power asset management.

EIMV’s participation at the ICTRAM conference once again confirms the institute’s active role and international recognition in the fields of research, development, and standardization of advanced methods for diagnostics, operation and asset management of power transformers.
