10 years of domestic know-how driving Slovenian power plants
4. Sep, 2025NES Numeric Excitation System) has recently become synonymous with innovation and reliability in the Slovenian power industry. It is a digital excitation system, the result of domestic knowledge and development by experts at the Milan Vidmar Electric Power Research Institute, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary since its first installation in a small hydroelectric power plant. During this time, we have continuously upgraded and improved NES, so that today it offers much more than just excitation current for synchronous generators – it has become a comprehensive solution that increases the reliability and efficiency of power plant operation.
In ten years, the number of installed systems has risen to 45, operating in power plants throughout Slovenia. They operate in a generator voltage range from 0.4 kV to 6.3 kV, with excitation currents up to 200 A, and are connected to both low-voltage and medium-voltage networks. Our partners, such as SENG, GEN, SEL, Elektro Ljubljana, OVE, OVEN, and numerous private owners of small hydroelectric power plants, have recognized NES as a reliable and advanced solution for many years.
Each NES is designed specifically for each power plant and optimized in terms of basic excitation parameters and system operator requirements in accordance with applicable legislation (RfG and SONDO SONDSEE). The latest systems we installed in a small hydroelectric power plant on the Sava River, where two generators together exceed 2 MW of power, represent a special milestone.
For a decade now, NES has been successfully proving that domestic knowledge and development are the foundation of the energy future.
