The Physical-Chemical Transformer Diagnostics Department (OKEM) carries out activities in the areas of physical and chemical research in power engineering, those being:
- Physicochemical diagnostic testing of power and instrument transformers,
- Testing of transformer oils and paper insulation according to the requirements of IEC specifications and directives, recommendations internationally in force, and Slovene legislation, using methods in compliance with standards,
- Issuing expert physicochemical diagnostic assessments in the area of operational reliability of new and old transformers,
- Fundamental and applied research in physicochemical diagnostics,
- The use of recognized methods and the further development of the most up-to-date non-destructive diagnostic methods for the early detection of faults, preventive maintenance, the achievement of the longest possible life span and operational reliability of transformers,
- Estimation of the remaining life span and technological elaboration in the area of investment, maintenance and operational revitalization activities in transformers and other high-voltage equipment,
- Advising, education, organization of conferences and working group meetings,
- Research and interlaboratory "round robin" testing in working groups of the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in the area of developing standards for physicochemical diagnostics of electro-insulating systems. The department experts also participate in the SIST TPD technical committee in the area of liquid and gas dielectrics.
